Dr. Maria Castro
was born in Buenos Aires and
trained in Argentina, the United States and
England. She is Co-Director of the Board of Governors Gene
Therapeutics Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and
was recently honored with an Endowed Chair in Gene Therapeutics. Dr.
Castro is also Professor of Medicine and of Molecular and Medical
Pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of
California, Los Angeles.She serves as a permanent member of the
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National
Institutes of Health. She has published over 200 articles, reviews and
book chapters and serves as a mentor and role model to young
scientists, PhD students and interns who come to work under her
tutelage from all over the world. Dr. Castro's research focuses on
understanding the mechanisms which elicit the regression of cancer
mediated by the immune system with the goal of developing new treatments.
